LA vs. NYC vs. Overseas Manufacturing: A Cost, MOQ, and Lead-Time Comparison

There's no single "best" place to manufacture your clothing line. There's only the right place for your brand at your current stage. Here's a side-by-side comparison of LA vs. NYC vs. overseas manufacturing — the three places most emerging brands end up choosing between — on the factors that actually matter.

The three options in one sentence

  • Los Angeles: Small-to-medium batch, fast turn, premium "Made in USA" positioning.
  • New York City: Premium and heritage, especially for woven shirting, outerwear, and tailored categories.
  • Overseas (Asia, Mexico, Central America): Lower per-unit cost, higher MOQ, longer lead time.

Cost

Headline per-unit cost (approximate, varies by category):

| Category | LA | NYC | Overseas | |---|---|---|---| | Basic tee (cotton) | $7–$12 | $9–$14 | $3–$6 | | Hoodie / fleece | $18–$28 | $22–$32 | $9–$16 | | Denim (5-pocket) | $35–$55 | $45–$70 | $18–$30 | | Dress / woven top | $14–$25 | $18–$30 | $7–$14 |

These are rough bands, not quotes. But the ratio is what matters: overseas is typically 30–60% cheaper than LA on per-unit cost, and LA is usually 15–25% cheaper than NYC.

MOQ (minimum order quantity)

This is where emerging brands get squeezed.

  • LA: 50–150 pieces per style is common. Some factories will run 30–50 on a first order.
  • NYC: 75–200 pieces per style. Less flexibility on small-batch.
  • Overseas: 300–1,000+ pieces per style per color is standard. Some factories have "low MOQ" lines at 200–500.

If you're launching with under $25K in production capital, overseas is almost always out of reach unless you go through an agent.

Lead time

From approved tech pack to delivery:

  • LA: 6–10 weeks (samples 1–2 weeks, production 4–6 weeks, plus shipping).
  • NYC: 8–12 weeks.
  • Overseas: 16–24 weeks including ocean freight (faster via air at higher cost).

LA wins on speed. Overseas wins on cost. NYC sits in the middle on both.

Quality and category fit

  • LA: Strong in knits, streetwear, contemporary basics, denim, athleisure. Massive depth in the Fashion District.
  • NYC: Strong in woven shirting, tailored garments, outerwear, premium categories. Heritage craftsmanship.
  • Overseas: Strong in everything at scale — but quality varies more, and you can't walk the floor.

"Made in" label value

  • "Made in USA" (LA or NYC): Premium positioning, sustainability story, marketing asset. Premium and luxury buyers increasingly ask for it.
  • "Made in Mexico" / "Made in [specific country]" can also carry story if it's true to your brand.
  • "Made in China" (or similar): Neutral for most mass-market; not a negative for most categories below premium.

The decision framework

Use this three-question filter:

1. What's your launch budget? Under $30K → LA. $30K–$100K → LA or NYC depending on category. $100K+ → overseas is back in play. 2. What's your speed-to-market need? Testing a trend in 8 weeks → LA. Solid seasonal line → NYC. Pre-booking for a season a year out → overseas. 3. What's your brand story? Premium / heritage / sustainable → LA or NYC. Value-driven, broad distribution → overseas.

Most emerging brands we work with at Los Angeles Fashion Consulting start in LA, launch their first collection, learn what sells, and then decide whether to move production overseas for reorders — not the other way around.

Where to start

If you're in the early-stage "where should I even be making this" phase, the right move is a 30-minute conversation with a manufacturing consultant who can match your product, MOQ, and budget to the right factory network. At LAFC, we do that matching as a standing part of our launch work.
